Synovial chondromatosis .

  • It is a rare benign disorder characterized by metaplastic formation of multiple osseocartilaginous nodules within the synovial membrane of the joints.
  • Usually occurs unilateral.
  • Females are more commonly affected.
  • Patients may be asymptomatic.
  • Symptoms: joint noises, pain, preauricular swelling, mouth opening limitation, decreased range of motion, change in occlusion.
  • Imaging features: multiple radiopaque loose bodies within the synovial fluid and joint space surrounding the condylar head. In advanced stages of the disease sclerosis and erosion of condylar head and glenoid fossa may be seen.
