Primordial cyst (Keratocyst) .

  • It is a cyst arising from the degeneration of the enamel organ before any dental hard tissue (enamel or dentin) forms. It occurs in the place of a tooth that has never developed.
  • The primordial cyst is now more commonly identified as an odontogenic keratocyst (OKC). This is due to the fact that many cysts previously diagnosed as primordial cysts were found to be OKCs upon histopathological examination.
  • Most frequently is found in the mandibular third molar and the region distal to it.
  • Radiographically appears as a well-defined, unilocular radiolucency located in the area of a missing tooth.
