Simple bone cyst (traumatic cyst) .

  • It is a solitary bony cavity that is not lined by epithelium (pseudocyst). At surgical excision, an empty cavity, or a cavity containing fluid or soft tissues is observed.
  • Simple bone cyst does not cause signs or symptoms and most often is an incidental finding during  radiographic examination.
  • The majority of the cases occur in young people in their 2nd decade of life.
  • Most common location: mandible, premolar/molar region.
  • Radiographically is a unilocular, moderately well defined and moderately well corticated radiolucency.
  • Computed tomography images show a slight buccal – lingual expansion of the cortical plates.
  • A characteristic feature of the lesion is that it often inserts between the apices of the teeth (scalloping).
  • There is rarely any resorption or displacement of the adjacent teeth. The teeth are usually vital.
  • The prognosis is good. No recurrences occur after surgical excision.
